Chiranjeevi says Women should be more active in politics

GUNTUR: “We are for social justice, but women cannot be given 33 per cent tickets as they are not coming forward to play an active role in politics,” said Praja Rajyam founder Chiranjeevi here on Tuesday when asked if they can expect 50 per cent of PR tickets. At a press conference in Ethukuru on the city outskirts, after completing his road show in Guntur city at 2 a.m., Mr. Chiranjeevi said “Women are not active in politics and seat reservations cannot be done based on population figures, as the winning chance of candidates was more important.” Upbeat Claiming that the Mahila Rajyam unit of the party was more active politically than any other unit, he did not foresee any major role for them at this point. Sounding ecstatic over the crowd turnout in Guntur district and the city, he said that voluntary flocking of people to the roadshow was a good sign and predicted that all this would get translated into votes. Without outlining his party’s stand on the proposed Coastal Corridor project, he opined that industrial development was essential, but not at the cost of livelihood of local people like fishermen and those depending on plantations on the coast. The Congress government tried to occupy the entire land on the coast in the name of the project, which he said was wrong. Satyam probe A definite ‘time-frame’ was essential for the CBI inquiry into the Satyam Computers scam and prior to that a sitting Supreme Court judge must probe the entire episode, including that of Maytas. Both the Congress and TDP were trying to evade a discussion on Satyam by raising frivolous issues in the Assembly, he said.
