Bollywood Calling to Tollywood!

This story might sound familiar. While Tollywood's female screen-scorchers have usually managed to carve neat niches in Bollywood (Sridevi, JayaPrada, Rambha, Asin, Genelia now Trisha), their male counterparts seem to harbour no B-town dreams. Chiranjeevi, Nagarjuna and Venkatesh might have got mixed box-office report cards in their Bollywood innings, but superstardom in their home territory prevented them from shifting base or even juggling the two. A few decades ago that's what happened when yesteryear leading Telugu stars like NTR and ANR dabbled with Bollywood. In 1952, NTR first appeared in the Hindi remake of Patala Bhairavi to mark his debut in Bollywood. Later, he also did a full-fledged Hindi film, Naya Aadmi , before settling down in Tollywood for an illustrious innings. Even his colleague and thespian ANR acted in Hindi film Suvarna Sundari. Surprisingly, none of these heartthrobs stayed on to pursue a serious career in Mumbai's tinseltown. Of course, things seem to have changed a bit since then. T-town's new age stars are not averse to trying their luck in Bollyland. Siddharth who had a successful Bollywood debut with Rang De Basanti claims to be "selective" about the films that he does in Bollywood and has just wrapped up his second Hindi film, Striker. Another young Telugu actor K S Prakash, son of K Raghavendra Rao, co-starred with Shabana Azmi in Morning Raaga, but is now directing a Telugu-Hindi bilingual with Siddharth in the lead. In between, J D Chakravarthy stormed Bollywood with Satya, but he too is content doing Telugu films. Nitin is the latest to have geared up to test waters in Bollywood with Ram Gopal Varma's Agyaat. Despite a lean patch in T-wood, Nitin's bagged the plum role of the male lead in the Hindi-Telugu bilingual opposite Priyanka Kothari. "His vulnerable looks suited our storyline," says RGV. Nitin's dad, producer Sudhakar Reddy, says "it's a dream debut" for him. For megastar Chiranjeevi, the tryst with Bollywood was just "to prove that southern stars can also leave their mark in Bollywood," and he feels nothing can replace the "admiration of regional fans". Producer Suresh Babu says Tollywood's male superstars are unlikely to move out of their kingdoms. "Top stars will stick to their respective language films to retain their stardoms. They might occasionally do a Hindi film to reach out to a pan-Indian audience. The younger lot of actors might be testing waters but only the finest talent will be absorbed by Bollywood," he says. Producer Aditya Ram is happy that "Telugu talent" is breaking barriers. "You should dream big. There's nothing wrong in expanding your horizons in your chosen field," he says. And if dreaming big brings a Telugu superstar national acclaim and recognition, no one's complaining!

With Swetha's Ride doing well at B.O, the makers of the movie are planning to cash in on similar title. Buzz is that they have zeroed in on the title - Speed. The movie is action entertainer might release in August. It has completed shooting part.
